چکیده

Existing blind adaptive equalizers that use nonconvex cost functions and stochastic gradient descent suffer from lack of global convergence to an equalizer setup that removes sufficient IS1 when an FIR equalizer is used. In this paper, we impose convexity on the cost function and anchoring of the equalizer away from the all-zero setup. We establish that there exists a globally convergent blind equalization strategy for 1D pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) systems with bounded input data (discrete or continuous) even when the equalizer is truncated. The resulting cost function is a constrained ZI norm of the joint impulse response of the channel and the equalizer. Our results apply to arbitrary linear channels (provided there are no unit circle zeros) and apply regardless of the initial IS1 (that is whether the eye is initially open or closed). We also show a globally convergent stochastic gradient scheme based on an implementable approximation of the ZI cost function.

Convexity in SISO blind equalization

In [1], a new class of blind equalization cost functions was proposed. They have the particularity of being unimodal, and some of them, sectionally convex in the Combined System Domain (CDS), both properties seeming very attractive for a cost function, though no proof (or specific definition) was given of the sectional convexity. In this paper we show, using a particular case of this class, tha...

A fast linear programming algorithm for blind equalization

A fast implementation of a special non-MSE cost function for blind equalization is presented here. This baud-rate equalization algorithm is based on a convex cost function coupled with a simple linear constraint on the equalizer parameters. For a generic class of channels with persistently exciting quadrature amplitude modulation input signals, this new algorithm allows the convergence of equal...

Notes on cost functions and estimators for 'Bussgang' adaptive blind equalization

The aim of this paper is to present some remarks on the cost functions for blind channel equalization by ‘Bussgang’ algorithms recently discussed in the literature; also, some possible associated non-Bayesian estimators are considered with details, and the effects of the choice of such estimators in relation to ‘Bussgang’ filtering are investigated.

Convex combinations of adaptive algorithms for blind equalization of QAM signals

Based on concurrent algorithms and on the convex combination of one slow and one fast CMA (Constant Modulus Algorithm), we propose a convex combination of two blind equalizers adapted respectively by CMA and the modified SDD (Soft Decision-Directed) algorithm for recovering of QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) signals. For high signal-to-noise ratio, the performance of the proposed scheme i...
